The red colour in the seawater around the Waterford coast is due to a marine organism Noctiluca scintillans. This is a natural marine organism that shows red/orange in the water and has the characteristic of bioluminescence, which will be visible at night. It is not harmful to swimmers so we are not proposing bathing restrictions. It will likely dissipate over the next few days.
